A GATHERING OF BEARS
The two projector slide program describes the
preparations for and journey to McNeil River Alaska to view the largest
concentration of brown bears in the world.
Many have seen calendar photographs or nature programs that
feature scenes from McNeil River but because the State of Alaska issues only
about 180 permits a year, few have actually had the opportunity to visit the
sanctuary. In 1998 I was fortunate enough to win a permit to visit this
remarkable place. During my visit I observed more than 60 bears at one time in
and around the McNeil River falls. The falls impede the salmon during their annual
migration and provide the attraction for the bears.
The forty five minute program features many photographs of the
bears fishing, playing, fighting and just plain hanging out around the falls.
